General Information:
Please look over your child’s sentences each night. They have been missing capitalizations, correct punctuation, and have had numerous misspelled words. Please remember that sentences must be a minimum of FIVE words and they may only use TWO new words in a sentence. Thank you for taking this extra time to ensure your child is completing their homework correctly.
Congratulations to our class spelling bee participants! They did a great job! That took a lot of nerve to get up there against all those big kids! I am so proud of them both!
Our next field trip will be to The Magic School Bus Live at the Oregon Children’s Theatre on February 10th. If you have not sent in the permission slip please do so by as soon as possible.
Students should still be practicing their reading passages. Please time them for one minute a couple times in a row every time they practice.
Bags will be sent home Monday for our chicken fund! This is part of our school wide service project. Please read the attached paper to find out the details of our project. Some students have already sent in money which I will count toward their contribution. I also told students that if everyone brought in one dollar then I would put in five.
Riggs:
And the journey continues… We will continue to learn words from List 4. Please remember that nightly homework needs to include new words, missed words, missed phonograms, and sentences for new words. Students will begin to practice a writing dress up. Dress ups make our writing “yummy” and not boring. The first dress up we will learn is the “because phrase”. We will practice it all week in class and starting next week students will be required to have at least one because phrase on their nightly homework.
I.E. The little baby kitten ran.
The little baby kitten ran because the dog was chasing it.
Help students review all phonograms. I will pick any 20 at random on our daily phonogram tests.
Math:
We will complete lessons 82- 85 and take Assessment 16. New concepts this week will be reading and drawing a pictograph, writing a fraction to show part of a set, picturing a fractional part of a set, writing a number in expanded form, and subtracting five facts.
The history topic this month will be the Maya, Inca, and Aztec. This week we will focus on the Maya. We will learn how the Maya built their cities in the rain forests. We will discover their accomplishments in architecture, astronomy, writing, religion, math, and farming and we will locate them on a map. Students will also make a Mayan mask (this was unaccomplished last week).
We will read and complete a book report for Pinocchio.
Character Ed, Health, and Agriculture
Our class will have a Wednesday morning meeting to check in and see how things are going at school. We will discuss any issues, problems, or feelings we may need to address.
We will continue our emotions health unit. Students will practice recognizing various emotions and we will do some emotion role playing.
