Coming this week in 2nd Grade

Riggs

*** Please note that homework sentences now need to be a minimum of 7 words.       We will be continuing to build charts this week to assist us in improving our writing.

As we continue to use sentences in our daily spelling homework, please review the following information if there is any confusion on the process.

  1. 1.New
    1. a.Students will come home with a piece of paper folded creating fourThe student writes the word one time in school.  The word needs to be practiced three more times at home.
    2. b.The words are written vertically down the column one at time before movingFor example tonight’s words are school, street, stay, front, hand, hands, ring, & rings.  We write each word one time and then move to the next column starting again at any.  We do not want to write school, school, school as this copying does not engage student’s brains.

  1. 2.New Word Sentences
    1. a.Each new word needs to be used in a sentence on the back of the student’s homework/RiggsThey can only use words they have learned and added to their Riggs notebook in these sentences.
    2. b.This means students are bringing their notebooksIt is extremely important that students bring this notebook back to school with them each day.  This is a big responsibility because of the hours of work students have already put into their notebooks.
    3. c.Using words only found in the notebook can be frustrating for someWe encourage students to practice oral sentences first.  Also, keep in mind all words found in the Riggs notebook can be used. This includes challenge words, regular words, and any word found on a chart.
    4. d.Students may write more than one spelling word in theirIf they use more than one word in a sentence they do not have to write an additional sentence. For example:  I will stay waiting in front of the school, but I will stay out of the street.

  1. 3.Missed Words
    1. a.Students have a typed sheet in their homework folder with Spelling List 2 at the top and Spelling List 3 on the reverseOn this sheet there are checks and dates for words missed on the spelling test.  If students have one check they are to write the word 5x.  These words can be written on the same homework sheet under their new words.  We have additional Riggs paper available if needed.

Your help is greatly appreciated.  We realize this is a lot of information to digest and; if you have questions please contact us.

Excellence in Writing

We are continuing to write paragraphs each week in class. The goal is have students utilize a resource text to create a key word outline, practice an oral paragraph, write a rough draft, and revise a final draft each week.  While we are still focusing on content and structure, we are introducing style elements. This week’s paragraph is about corn.

Saxon

This week we will be reading a thermometer to the nearest two degrees, using Guess and Check to solve a problem, collecting data, estimating sums, estimating measurement, and using centimeters.  Our next assessments are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday.

History and Geography

We will be following the American expansion into Western North America.

Reading

This week we will be reading the tall tale Johnny Appleseed.

Science

We have begun working on our Science fair project! We now have a question, a hypothesis, and much of our background research completed. This week we will be focusing on our experiment and collection of data.
