*Progress Report: Your child will be bringing home a progress report every Wednesday. If something is highlighter it needs to be completed and attached to the back of the progress report (math stays in their math folder). Use a sticky note on the page that is finished or corrected. Sticker or stamp means that your child is caught up and they earned 15-20 minutes of free time on a Thursday, otherwise they can use that time to correct or get their homework done. If your child is sick or misses school they will most likely be catching up with missed work during this time. Please sign the bottom of the progress report and your child will earn a ticket for handing it in on Thursday. If something is highlighted but it has a due date that is after today, just remind your child to complete the assignment by the due date.

What we are currently studying in third grade:
Spelling – We continue to review phonograms and are working through list 18.
We are writing in cursive! All letters of the alphabet have been practiced and your child is well on their way to writing beautifully in cursive. When we practice our spelling words they will be written in columns in our Spelling Folders and English Notebooks; however always practice in green Spelling Folder. If you should see a pencil check to the left of the red margin in your child's English Notebook that means to practice the word 5 times for each check, an M to the left of the margin line means a marking has been missed and that word needs to be practiced 3 times in their Green Spelling folder. Mrs. Stouder’s group will bring the actual test home so they can write their missed words. Once your child has mastered this system it works beautifully, if you participate they can show you how the system works and it makes them feel proud of their work.
Writing– This week we are writing journal entries all week and working on our colonial brochures. Visual aids are needed for their colonial presentations. These can be any of the following; a poster, clothing that they wear, a model, etc.. Dress ups are in your child’s English Notebook (16a) and should be added to their rough draft and final copies (left hand margin). We will be working on collecting information about your child’s colony for their brochures and paragraphs this week. Several students must re-write their family paragraphs with the rubric on pg. 17 in their English Notebook.
Monday – practicing colonial presentations and Anne Hutchinson
Tuesday – practicing colonial presentations and Anne Hutchinson
Wednesday – practicing colonial presentations and Anne Hutchinson
Thursday – Final touches to our colonial projects
Please have your child read over their writing work and help them with sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation should they need it. There is time given daily for working on their writing.
Cursive Wow, they are doing an awesome job of sitting up straight and connecting their letters, it’s so exciting!! Please make sure your child is forming their letters correctly and meeting their check points, they know what these are. They are working hard on this in class. J
Math - We have been counting by odd, even, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 25 and 100’s. We have been rounding to the nearest 10’s and 100’s. Multiplication has started, so counting by the above numbers will help your child with their multiplication facts. Mixed fractions, decimal numbers with tenths and hundredths place values. Decimals, fractions and percents are what we’re focusing on, too. We will be doing a lot of problem solving this year and teaching the process. Our next assessment will be Tuesday Feb. 14, 2012 (review the last 5 lessons).
History – Thirteen Colonies
Science – Brain and Nervous
Play – We are practicing a colonial play “Ann Hutchinson: An Outspoken Woman” Everyone will be participating in the play and each student will be memorizing their lines, they took them home this weekend. Costumes are simple, nothing fancy – see attachment.
Sayings and Phrases – “One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel” This is found in your child’s composition notebook, which is usually left at school. Ask them to bring it home if they get behind.
Our daily oral language is written in our English Notebooks daily. We are done with 1-20The Thirteen Original Colonies.
Mystery Question Why do I want to come to your colony? Have your child write their answer on a piece of paper with their name on it. Turn it into the agenda box by Wednesday morning and they can get a ticket!!
