We also had a fun time playing with oobleck and learning about Physical Change of matter. Next week we will be making butter and bread and talking about Chemical Change of matter.

Global Education

The kids voted and we will be collecting money to buy families in a third world country rabbits and chicks. Check out Heifer International http://www.heifer.org/ for more details. There will be envelopes in their DOG to return with money to donate to this charity. We are hoping that the kids will do “chores” to help earn the money that is brought in.

Reading

For the month of February students will be required to read a biography. Their book report will be on a biography and I need to see the biographies they are reading this Monday. Some of you I know have them on hold and if your don’t have them by Monday, no worries. Just let me know that you are waiting for the book to come in. THANKS!!

Pen Pals with India

Our letters are in the mail and the latest blog entry we read and discussed was about freeing an elephant. Go to …http://iminindiaandyourenot.blogspot.com/ for more information. I don’t share all the blog entries with the students, just the ones that apply to them. Our letters to our penpals are in the mail and should arrive in India next week. Come see the bulletin board outside our classroom to see the letters we received from India.

Harassment and Bullying

We had a staff training on harassment and bullying. We will be talking about his next week in class. We have talked a lot about bullying and will add harassment to that discussion. You have seen forms defining bullying so here is what we are talking about as it pertains to harassment…

Harassment can be…

         Name calling

Slurs (racial or ethnic in nature)

         Rape or sexual assault

         Inappropriate jokes

         Graffiti

         Telling sexual stories

         Vandalism

         Pressures for sexual favors

Spreading rumors (true or not) or telling lies

         Comments about a person’s body

         Unwanted personal gifts

         Inappropriate staring

         Sexting

Face to face, online, through a third party

I know some of the language is strong, and I STRONGLY encourage you to discuss these behaviors with your children. If students exhibit any of these behaviors they will be written up and documented. Also, be aware that you as parents are role models and if they see you modeling these types of behaviors they may mimic you and display them in the classroom. For more information on bullying and harassment go to…
