We had a great week last week and are well into our study of the American Revolution. We read about the Stamp Act and then the next day I enacted a 4th grade Stamp Act. By the end of the day I had students petitioning, boycotting, and protesting the unfair Stamp Act. They successfully repealed this tax and ask them what they learned. We were learning about boycotts, petitions, and protests. Ask them about it. It was a fun learning experience.
Homework for the week-end Spelling fixes and missed words Math – lesson #50 Finish Parent essay – The kids are to make a nice little “booklet” with the essay stapled inside. They each brought home a 12 x 20 piece of construction paper and it should be folded in half so it is 10 x 12 size. It should open like a book with the checklist on the back (the kids glued the checklist already) and the essay stabled inside on the left side. That leaves the front cover and front flap for the students to decorate with pictures etc. of the parent they interviewed, country where parent was born, etc. Get creative. These are due Thursday, Jan. 26, and will be displayed at the Heritage Fair. The essay can be typed. They need to marked and see the checklist I provided them for dress-ups and sentence openers. After they are typed and printed students can go back with a pencil and mark their dress-ups and sentence openers.
Global Education We are talking about life in 3rd world countries and getting the kids excited about collecting money to buy a commodity for those less fortunate than us. We have the choice to buy chickens, pigs, goats, etc. Watch in their DOG for more details on what we decide to work for. We are doing this with our 2nd grade Reading Buddies.
Reading For the month of February students will be required to read a biography. They may choose to read one on their Revolutionary Hero (which we will pick next week) or on someone else they are interested in. So if you need help getting a biography I will be at the Tualatin Library to help students find one. (See below)
Tualatin Library The date has changed from Jan. 26 to Feb. 3. I will be at the Tualatin library from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Feb. 3 to help students find a biography on a person who participated in the American Revolution. We will also use the computers at the library to access the library’s data-base to find information about Revolutionary Heroes for the Hero Project. Students will need to be accompanied by an adult while at the library. This is optional if your student can get a biography on their own. Information on the Hero Project will come next week.
Class Spelling Bee Our class spelling bee will be held on Monday, Jan. 23 at 1:00. The top 2 students in the bee will be participating in the school wide bee on Feb. 1.
Heritage Project Interview due Tuesday so we can begin writing the essay in class.
Pen Pals with India We received our letters from the students in India and we will be responding and sending letters back this next week. We are following this blog at school…
