Saxon Math 5MRS. Ottley
Please read over the math policy with your student, sign, and return the bottom portion of this letter. Keep the top portion for your records.
Daily Math Lessons - 30% of grade Daily Assignments - 7 points
Tests - 70% of grade Tests - 40 points
Math lessons are due the following day after they are assigned. They are to be done neat, show work, and in pencil. I will teach the students how to format their math paper.
Points will be lost for … Messy work -1 point Late (excludes excused absence and use a of homework pass) -1 point Missing more that 8 problems -2 to -3 points
Tests … Given after each five lessons starting with lesson #10
Tests will come home the day given or the next day for the students to fix the missed problems and for PARENTS to SIGN AND the student is to RETURN the next day. These returned tests count as a homework assignment and are worth 7 points. Students may retake a test if they are not happy with their grade. However, a “B” grade is the highest score I will give on a test retake. Please talk with me about a test retake to set up a time. Test retakes must take place before the next test is given.
Late assignments …
Accepted ONE WEEK PAST THE DUE DATE. After that they will receive 0 points. If your student is absent, they have until the following Monday or a date worked out with me to get in the missed assignments.
Misc. Students correct their math assignments in class in blue ink. Comments written in red ink are from me. While correcting in class, if students have a pencil or erasure in their hand I will collect their homework and the lesson will need to be redone. This will constitute an immediate “Process.” Correcting in blue ink encourages honesty.
Textbooks cost $60 and students and parents are responsible for them. If they are damaged you will be responsible for replacing them. Textbooks need to be covered with a paper sack or other heavy paper. No fabric covers.
There will be an e-book available on-line if your student would prefer to not take their book back and forth to school each day. Please stay posted for how to access this e-book. A link will be provided shortly. This is also a great resource if your student forgets their book or if you are traveling and don’t want to take the textbook with you.
I am trying to teach responsibility and personal accountability for getting assignments in on time and doing them neatly and correctly the first time, as well as making these assignments manageable for me. Also, consistent and regular math practice is the best way to master math concepts.
