SENTENCE OPENERS

Sentence Openers are the first word of a sentence. In the student's writing they will be required to use each one these in each paragraph. Refer to the checklist for the ones required per writing assignment. Also, as we get to the end of the year students will not be allowed to have 3 or more sentences in a row that contain the same sentence opener.

 

1   ly-how adverbs (words that end in the suffix "ly")

2   Prepositional (See below attachement for a list of prepositions)

3   Subject

4  Clausal (when, while, where, as, since, if, although)

5  ing  (words ending in the suffix "ing")

6 VSS (very short sentence --- 3-5 words.
