January 26, 2011 Greetings Parents, We enjoyed a great time together last Friday at the All School Musical. Fifth graders did a fabulous job on and off the stage! Today was our All School Heritage Fair and before going to assembly students went to share their essays with our kindergarten buddies. The room was buzzing with their reading while kindergarteners listened very attentively.
Continuing OAKS State Testing: Students who have not completed tests that were started will have ample time to finish them. Thank you for seeing that your children have plenty of rest and healthy breakfasts. Writing: Sayings and Phrases: Fifth graders have 31 sayings and phrases to learn during the next 2 terms. The Sayings and Phrases packet is a major part of students writing grade. The Excellence In Writing format is to be used for student’s Sayings and Phrase packets. See the back of the sayings and phrase packet for the grading criteria. On Monday, January 30rd the phrase “Chip on your shoulder is due. See me if you have any questions. Engrade: Remember check Engrade regularly to monitor your children’s progress.
History: Feudal Japan Unit – We focused on the four major islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu). This week we wrote personal codes inspired by the Bushido Code.
Science: Classification System of living things – starting with what, why, how, and who classifies.
Health: You are What You Eat was this week focus.
Vocabulary/Spelling: In class Spelling Bee takes place on Monday, January 30th. You may go to www.spellingbee.com if your students want to practice prior to the Bee. The MITCH Charter School Bee is February 1st.
Weekly Spelling/Vocabulary: Monday, January 30th Wordly Wise Lesson 9 section D and E are due. There will be a Wordly Wise test for Lesson 9 on Monday.
Spelling Assignment Stories: Fifth graders need 4 dress-ups and 4 openers in all writing pieces. The handouts in their DOGs are helpful tools to refer to when looking for openers and dress-ups. This is such a wonderful writing program and it is becoming second nature to many! Please contact me to arrange a meeting with your student if they are still struggling with dress-ups and openers. I am willing to meet after school or even on a Friday by appointment.
Math Course 1 Mrs. Grothe's Section: Monday – Test 9, Tuesday – Investigation 5, Wednesday - Lesson 51 Rounding Decimal Numbers, Thursday - Lesson 52 Mentally Dividing Decimal Numbers by 10 and by 100.
5th Grade Student Store: Next week Student Store workers are: Manager – Divya, Cashier – Natalie, Inventory/Sales – Jacob, Marketing/Sales – Christian, Assistant - Madison.
Heifer International Service Project Update: The class has decided to donate 50% of January and February profits to Heifer International. We also will make GAK and to sell and donate 100 % of the proceeds. There is a donation jar too for students to donate their allowance or money they earn from chores. They are extremely excited about giving an animal to a family in third world who is in need. Enthusiasm about this project is contagious!
Mark your Calendar: January 30th - 8a.m. -9 a.m. Oaks Reading Test February 1 – Spelling Bee 10:30-11:30 a.m. Oaks Math Test February 14th – Courthouse Field Trip (8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Let me know if you would like to chaperone.
