Homework Policy

M.I.T.C.H. Kindergarten Homework Policy

Homework is sent home daily in a purple plastic homework folder. In the folder will be the Riggs sheet, Riggs paper, Math paper, and occasionally other notes, permission slips, etc. The Riggs sheet will have a list of phonograms on the front and daily assignments on the back. Checked phonograms (in the beginning of the year letter strokes will be with the phonograms) are new and should be practiced 4 times. Underlined phonograms were missed by your child on that day’s test and should be practiced 5 times. I will go over this more on Back to School night on September 30th.

Homework folders should be emptied NIGHTLY. The only things that should come back to school are finished homework assignments, Riggs Phonogram sheets, permission slips, an, notes to me. That’s it. Please empty out the rest.

Corrected homework will be returned in a clear plastic folder once a week on Monday. The folder MUST come back BY Thursday so that it can be filled again. If it is not back I cannot send home the work that week. It comes home on Monday. Please, send it back by Thursday.

On average, homework will take about 30 minutes.

Riggs homework is assigned daily, and reflects the daily lesson and phonograms/words missed on tests and challenges.

Math homework is assigned daily and dew the next school day. Homework reflects the daily lesson.

Occasionally there is an extra assignment related to Core Knowledge Events, such as Poetry Open Mic, of all school events, such as Heritage Fair or Science Fair. Plenty of advance planning, instruction and work time is given.

Homework is assigned on weekends. It is the same as school night homework, but will often include one more short Riggs assignment.  This is because if students only have one opportunity to practice Riggs over 3 days off, they will retain much less. It is then reflected on the score of Monday’s test.  If at all possible, on weekends I recommend not going more than 1 day without Riggs. Take Friday or Saturday or Sunday off. Of course, it is up to you – this is only are commendation.

On holidays and extra days off a general weekend assignment of 1 -2 Riggs and 1 Math will be given and must be returned the next school day.

Please guide your child to complete assignments when well rested and nourished. Please refrain from completing work at breakfast before school and/or in the car.

Please take the time NOW to create a comfortable homework area in your home, where your student can "sit for success". Guide your child to use this space exclusively and consistently for homework.

Though your guidance and support are needed, please allow your student to work independently.  You may ask your child questions to lead them to an answer, if necessary, instead of giving them the answer or completing the work for them

If homework is NOT completed it will be sent home to be completed along with the new daily homework. If this begins to happen often, I will contact parent so we may discuss and find a way to best support the student’s home practice for learning.

Do not hesitate to call me at school or email me if you have any questions or need clarification on an assignment. I am happy to help in any way so that the assignment is understood, the student progresses and benefits from, and the assignment is turned in on time. I am at my desk until 12:15 and can be reached by email until 7 pm.

POLICY FOR ABSENSES:

All homework is due the following Monday after their return from an excused absences(s) (sickness or other non-scheduled event) for full credit.  Homework from absences is to be completed at home. Daily spelling test may not be made up.  Parent must notify me of absence so that I can create a homework folder. It will be ready for pick up on the day you notify me by 12:00 pm. Parent must make arrangements with me to pick it up.  Parents may also request that homework assignments be sent home with a sibling. Request to pick up or have homework given to a sibling be made before 9:30 am on the day of the absence.  Absent work will come home in a yellow folder or red folder. Absent work should be returned in THIS folder.

Vacation homework packets are not available.  While out of town, students may independently review past concepts and are responsible for all missed assignments one week upon return.

Assignments and projects from in class are optional to be made up at home.
