Monitoring Behavior in Kindergarten: The class earns points to choose a choice time in class or a free dress day. Points can be earned by accomplishing class goals or exceptional behavior. I believe and practice positive reinforcement to monitor and encourage behavior. No two children are the same. While Kindergarten does follow the MITCH discipline policy of reminder, warning, process, individual plans created in collaboration by teacher/parent/student are also used as needed. Individual behavior plans, whether it is meant to encourage and support in creating a new positive behavior or assist in curbing a negative behavior, will be discussed between parent/staff/administration as needed.
Discipline Policy: Kindergarten follows the same discipline policy as the rest of MITCH Charter School. It is very important that you take the time to read the MITCH School Wide Discipline Policy. If you need a copy, please let me know. Kindergarten follows the MITCH School Wide Discipline Policy: a student will be given a reminder, a warning, and then a process. Please refer to the discipline handbook, located online. If you need a copy, please let me know. Students will be filling out their process form in Mrs. Peterson's 6th grade classroom. The student will return to kindergarten only when excused by Mrs. Peterson. P.E., Music, and Art teachers will follow a similar procedure. Any assignment missed during a process will be made-up in addition to the homework assignment given that day. Parents must read, sign, and return a process form the next school day. Optional (strongly suggested): a consequence at home after a process is often effective in bridging communication between school and home. I am always open to talking about this so we are on the same page. Students may receive an automatic process for an extreme safety threat or disrespect to others.
Dress Code/Tardy/Infraction: Tardiness is unacceptable! Students should arrive in the classroom between at 7:40 to complete morning jobs and be ready to start class on time at 7:45. 7:46 is tardy! Parents will receive an infraction form to sign and return each time a student arrives tardy. After the 3rd tardy, kindergarten students will receive a process. Daily Dress Code: Students MUST adhere to school dress code. Please carefully read about the dress code in the parent handbook. It was revised this year so read carefully. Being out of dress code is an infraction. A process will be given after the 3rd infraction. Gym Dress Code: Please help you kindergartener appropriately for PE on Monday and Wednesday. Please wear tennis shoes (with closed heels). See Dress Code. Field Trip Dress Code: For safety I highly prefer students to wear a MITCH t-shirt. Please consider doing this. Please wear appropriate bottoms and shoes for the destination. (To a farm wear jeans and boots. To a play wear slacks, khakis, dress or skirt tennis shoes or nicer.) Coats, Hoodies and Sweaters: Please have your child bring an outdoor coat, not a hoodie. It makes everything much easier. It does not have to be navy blue. If it is an actual outdoor coat – anything from a windbreaker to a zip up fleece to a raincoat to a winter coat – it does not need to be navy. The kindergarten room runs cool. Please send your child with a navy sweater or sweatshirt. If it is not navy, I cannot let them wear it and I hate to see them cold. Please pack an indoor layer AND an outdoor layer.
