Elements of Music: All grades will cover and review music fundamentals, including rhythm, harmony, and melody. Dynamics, articulations, tempo, timbre, and unison are examples of the elements of music.
Listening and Understanding: All grade can appreciate music from our culture, and cultures around the world. Classical music helps us appreciate where our music systems developed, and Jazz helps understand how cultures mix in a society, like ours!
Instrument Studies: All students can expect to get their hands on an instrument this year. Upper grades will choose instruments to focus on, or bring one from home to perform upon. We mix our instruments, too, to make interesting ensembles.
Songs: Songs are included in Core Knowledge Curriculum, but appropriate requests are considered, as well as Mr. Gabriel’s favorite selections. Historical songs are important to learn, but so are modern ones. Also, students will have some opportunities to write their own songs.
Musical:1st and 6th grades will focus upon a mini Opera, or a “Musical”. This will involve some acting, some singing, a lot of preparation, and a great show. Parents, I could use your help with the musicals, especially when it comes to costumes!
Composition: Reading and writing music make for a solid foundation, and lead to a greater appreciation of music. Once basic skills are met, I will guide students to compose their own music, and we perform these compositions for the class. Also, wouldn’t it be neat to record our compositions to listen back? Well, we can do that, too.
Recording: My favorite part of teaching is hearing the music in our imaginations become real. Recordings allow us to capture this magic and bring it home to share with our family, and friends! Also, this is a neat way to remember the school year. Recordings take place throughout the school year, and final copies will be made available at the end of the year.
