M.I.T.C.H. Charter School 2012-2013

Health and Physical Education Scope and Sequence

 Kindergarten and 1st grade

The first year of PE is very crucial to the childs growth in athletics, some students are very shy and embarrassed to participate in PE while others are extremely outgoing. Either way, my goal is to help the child feel comfortable in participating and interacting with others. The main goals for Kinder are shown below:

  • Perform locomotor activities (walk, run, skip forward, skip backward, gallop, slide horizontally)
  • Participation ( Being willing to do ALL of the activities with the class, even if the child does not feel confident in their skills yet)
  • Cooperation ( Cooperating in activities and getting along with other classmates)

2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade

In the next few years, all of the previous goals are important but now we are moving forward and expecting more from our students. The largest addition is an exposure to lifetime sports and activities. Although a kindergartener and a first grader will also get some exposure to sports and activities, the expectation begins to rise as we go through these elementary grades. The main goals for these grades include

  • Sports Education (Becoming familiar and continuing familiarity with sports and other activities)
  • Fitness (Everyday, students will be instructed in 30 of fitness activities and stretching)

6th, 7th and 8th Grade

As our students enter middle school, this start to change as far as curriculum. The largest difference is that we begin to teach health regularly in the classroom. Health will take place regularly but may vary depending on the class. Middle school student may have opportunities to leave campus for varies PE classes in order to use fields or courts, so there are a few things to look forward to as a middle schooler! The main goals for grades 6-8 are:

  • Perform locomotor activities (walk, run, skip forward, skip backward, gallop, slide horizontally)
  • Participation ( Being willing to do ALL of the activities with the class, even if the child does not feel confident in their skills yet)
  • Cooperation ( Cooperating in activities and getting along with other classmates)
  • Sports Education (Becoming familiar and continuing familiarity with sports and other activities)
  • Fitness (Everyday, students will be instructed in 30 of fitness activities and stretching)
  • Rules and Regulations (Students will become familiar with rules and regulations of various activities)
  • Assignments (Students will be expected to complete various assignments in both health and PE)
